What Is Black Oxide?
Black oxide is a chemical conversion coating — not a plating — that forms a thin layer of magnetite (Fe₃O₄) directly on ferrous metals such as steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. The finish is typically 0.5–1 micron thick, so it adds essentially no dimension to the part. Often called black oxide plating, though technically it's a conversion coating.

- Anti-glare matte-black appearance for tooling, assemblies, and appearance parts.
- Oil-retentive surface improves lubricity and resists galling on fasteners and moving parts.
