InfiniTech Metal Finishing

Black Oxide Coating

Precision finishing for tight-tolerance parts. A black oxide conversion coating with zero dimensional change — ideal for tooling, dies, fasteners, and precision components. Serving manufacturers across Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Nebraska, and Texas since 1976.

What Is Black Oxide?

Black oxide is a chemical conversion coating — not a plating — that forms a thin layer of magnetite (Fe₃O₄) directly on ferrous metals such as steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. The finish is typically 0.5–1 micron thick, so it adds essentially no dimension to the part. Often called black oxide plating, though technically it's a conversion coating.

  • Zero dimensional change — thread fits, tolerances, and precision surfaces are preserved.
  • Anti-glare matte-black appearance for tooling, assemblies, and appearance parts.
  • Oil-retentive surface improves lubricity and resists galling on fasteners and moving parts.
  • Post-treatment oil or sealant provides corrosion resistance.
  • Versus zinc or nickel: zero build-up, anti-glare finish, and improved lubricity.

Black Oxide Applications

A precision black finish for manufacturers who can't afford dimensional drift.

Tooling & Dies

Punches, dies, and mold components. Dimensional stability means no tolerance loss.

Automotive

Fasteners, gears, and internal engine parts. Lubricity and anti-galling where it counts.

Fasteners & Precision Hardware

Bolts, screws, and small components. Thread fit and a uniform black finish.

General Industrial

Gears, couplings, stampings, and wire forms. Economical, uniform, and oil-retentive.

The Black Oxide Process

Three steps from raw part to a protected, precision-finished component.

  • Surface Preparation

Parts are cleaned and prepared so the conversion coating bonds uniformly.

  • Black Oxide Conversion

A controlled chemical reaction forms a thin magnetite (Fe₃O₄) layer on the ferrous surface.

  • Seal & Inspect

Post-treatment oil or sealant locks in corrosion resistance, followed by final inspection.

Rapid Response, Every Time

Black oxide is inherently fast. Standard orders ship quickly, and rush service is available when you need it.
